Classic garden (AU)

PROJECT

When we first saw this site, it was clear that this would be a special project. Being one of the original Bellingen timber houses, the property had a good amount of land in great proportions to create a garden. A central lawn with an old, large Frangipani was the main feature of the existing garden.

This setting called for a classic, more formal design.

A center path creates a vista from the house leading to a stone fountain imported from the south of France. Along this path, a timber pergola stretches across the width of the garden, dividing the space into two seating areas – a larger one for dining and a smaller, more intimate one for relaxing.

Bellingen can be very humid and hot in summer; hence the creation of shade was a priority. A good number of trees, such as Waterhousea, Native Frangipani and Magnolia Teddy Bear were planted.

The clients also requested an outdoor bath. Framed by two white Crepe Myrtles the concrete bathtub and copper shower are set in their own garden room paved with cobblestones.

On the western side of the house, a steel pergola was installed and covered with climbing plants to provide further protection from the afternoon sun.

In the front garden, large pots planted with Cycads were added, while Wisterias were used to frame the entry veranda.

At night, lighting highlights the features of this garden beautifully.

Overall, this classic Bellingen Garden is a peaceful retreat that combines formality with practical considerations for the local climate.
